Isla Floreana, Galápagos

Punta Cormorant, located on Isla Floreana, is one of the most unique places in the world. With its green-sand beaches, white-sand beaches, and wildlife, I was captivated every minute during my journey through the island.

Sally Lightfoot crabs line the shore of Floreana and many other islands in the Galápagos archipelago. Here is a crab enjoying a lovely sea urchin for lunch. Unlike many species in the Galápagos, these crabs are found outside of Ecuador on the coast of other parts of South and Central America as well.

Floreana in the Galápagos is one of only four locations in the world with a green sand beach. These gorgeous green stones add to the uniqueness of these beautiful islands.

Floreana is also home to many flamingos. Their pink color comes from their diet of different algae and shellfish. They can fly about 30 miles per hour, and they generally stay in groups. Outside of the picture, there was a flamboyance of flamingos nesting and caring for their young.

The other side of Punta Cormorant is also home to another beach. This one made up of white sand and is an important nesting site for Green Pacific Sea Turtles. In the above image, you can see the markings of the Sea Turtles that made their way to, and from, the nesting site.
